Description:

Paul Mata is entering his 9th year as a member of the Burt's Music teaching staff, teaching guitar and electric bass. He is also on staff as an instructor for The Coeur d'Alene Arts Council Summer Youth Program, where he teaches guitar, electric bass, beginning piano, improvisation, harmony, music theory, composition, appreciation, performance skills, and school band preparation. Paul's major emphasis is on teaching students to become skillful musicians with a broad understanding of common music principles, and the ability in which to apply them.

Hailing originally from the Los Angeles area, Paul grew up in a musical family. His Father was a guitarist and band leader, and his mother was a violinist. His brother is a blues guitarist and harmonica player and his sister a classical/ragtime pianist. The entire family played piano for recreation. Paul began playing the guitar at age 11, and has formally studied drums, and classical guitar. He played professionally throughout high school. During that time he and his band backed up several notable acts including The Coasters, Eddie Floyd (Knock on Wood), and Sonny and Cher. He did his first recording session at age 15 as a vocalist, later doing more studio work with his band. One of the band's accomplishments came during a battle of the bands held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in which they placed 2nd while competing against 150 of Southern California's very best groups.

After completing his tour of duty in the Navy, Paul attended Pasadena City College and California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned 2 AA degrees in English and Commercial Art. He is currently working towards the completion of his final quarter of study for his Bachelor's degree in English Literature. In Addition, Paul studied in college and privately with jazz notables Gary Foster, Bobby Bradford, Dave Koonse, Putter Smith and others. During the mid 70's, Paul was a staff writer for MCA music, publishing division, and gained much of his composition experience during that time.

Paul has been in the CDA area for about 15 years, and was the lead guitarist and one of the founding members of the blues group "Charlie Butts and the Filter Tips". He wrote the title track on Filter Tips cd "Told You Once" as well as four other tunes from the same release. He also sang lead vocals on several of the songs. Currently, he teaches full-time, and performs regularly in a duet with award-winning blues guitarist and composer Pat Coast. Paul has also spent the past few years researching, compiling, and documenting his teaching system in an effort to publish a method book for national distribution.

His years teaching have provided Paul with a rewarding career where daily he learns as much as he teaches, and he sees music and teaching as adventure in discovery with something new and exciting around every corner.

Paul is an amazing guitar teacher! Our son has been taking lessons for nearly 3 years. Paul has made it so much fun for him that we have to MAKE him put his guitar away. He was learning to write a song right away and Paul takes the time to find out what the student is interested in learning so the challenge is always fun. We highly recommend him!

I had the privilege of sitting under Paul for a few short months of advanced chord theory. Now every time I reach into my musical tool box i find my self using a "Mata" tool. He is a fine teacher and a gentleman!
